Do You Really Know What Hypnotherapy is About?

Quick! When someone mentions hypnosis, what’s the first image that pops into your head. I bet it’s a stage show with someone acting like a complete idiot, being made to dance like Elvis, right?

Sadly, this is the misconception that many people have, but nothing could be farther from the truth, notes Lexi Parrott.

Lexi is a Clinical Hypnotherapist who is certified through the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley and has been in private practice in Portland Oregon for the past 13 years. Lexi also integrates energy work into her hypnotherapy practice as a Reiki Master. Reiki is a spiritually guided energetic practice that calms and restores the body to a place of natural balance.

According to Lexi,

These misconceptions regarding hypnosis techniques and the fear of “mind control” probably stem from our lack of understanding about how the brain functions and what hypnosis really is.

Hypnosis is a actually a powerful , effective and life changing tool that uses natural state of relaxation to access the subconscious mind or right brain. Connecting with the right brain is like linking to the hard drive of your inner computer where all the memories and emotions of your past experience still remain. It is typically those unresolved early memories that create a faulty belief system, a distorted self image and behaviors that are really a cry for help.  Hypnotherapy allows you to safely re-examine those stories still imprinted in the deeper layers of your mind, and transform them so that you can finally create the life you want. When our old patterns  and beliefs and released, your subconscious mind is now highly receptive to supporting you in acting upon the suggestions you choose. Hypnosis is always safe….You are only receptive to the suggestions that you agree with, and you are always in control . In every moment of the hypnotherapy process, you have choice, and the ability to approach the work at your own pace and comfort level.

One of the most common misconceptions about hypnotherapy is that in the hypnotic state , you can be controlled or programmed like a robot. However, electroencephalogram studies of the brain under hypnosis show that the mind is relaxed, focused and attentive.

In fact, a person cannot be made to do anything againt their will or their values while in a hypnotic state. You can cluck like a chicken, but ONLY if you want to, not because you’ve been programmed to.

Lexi describes that in the hypnotic state, you can

  • Re-evaluate you inner programming
  • Access solutions and answers previously unattainable
  • Release habitual patterns of behavior and thinking
  • Change beliefs and perceptions about yourself
  • Access deep levels of calm and relaxation

Lexi Parrott’s practice focuses on empowering people to become the agent of change in their own life, as opposed to re-wiring people with a standard script
